Marizelle Nel receives Zonta Club of Hervey Bay award

THE Zonta Club of Hervey Bay hosted its 2021 Young Women in Public Affairs High Tea at the Hervey Bay RSL recently.

Fraser Coast Anglican College student Marizelle Nel was announced as the recipient of the 2021 Young Women in Public Affairs Award.

The award is presented annually to a young woman aged between 16 and 19 years who has demonstrated a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Newly elected Hervey Bay Zonta President and recipient of the 2020 Young Women in Public Affairs Award, Sara Diana Faraj shared how the award had helped her over the past year.

She also discussed her passion for politics and advocacy after having heard the stories of her own family as refugees to Australia – the country they call home.

Sara also shared her vision as president for the local Zonta club moving forward.

The high tea started with an inspiring Welcome to Country by Karen Hall, followed by a fashion parade hosted by local retail store Go Girl.

Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Darren Everard and Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari also delivered speeches before Division 5 Councillor Jade Wellings presented the award to Marizelle.

“Congratulations to Marizelle Nel, may this award help you to continue your community spirit and commitment to empowering and educating women all over the world,” the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay said in a statement.
