The group received $500 from the Hervey Bay RSL to put towards exercise programs for its members.

Coordinator Maryann Boyd said the community grant would greatly assist their efforts to keep people who suffer from Parkinson’s active and in a positive frame of mind.

“We were thrilled to hear we would be receiving the grant,” said Maryann.

She said the funding meant they could keep operating.

“We were unable to hold meetings last year due to COVID-19 and those meetings had always been by gold coin donation, so our fundraising efforts really did dry up.

“As a result, we submitted an application to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, because that’s exactly what we’re about. We are for the community,” explained Maryann.

She said the funding would help members take part in specialized exercises classes.

“There is no cure for Parkinson’s Disease but many people say living with the condition is 50 per cent medication and 50 per cent exercise. We have to keep our members moving.”

“Our meetings and activities give many people a reason to get out of the house. We usually have events twice a month and these include guest speakers and information on things like healthy living.

“Parkinson’s Disease is a very common neurological condition but many people do not know where they can go to get help.”

She said it was important for people living with Parkinson’s to get out of the house and share their stories.

“Everyone’s stories are different; the condition affects people in different ways. But the one thing that is always the same is that we encourage members to see a neurologist.”

Maryann said people wanting to join the Hervey Bay Parkinson’s Support Group can do so via the Parkinson’s Queensland website.
