The exhibition was planned to coincide with the Mary Poppins Festival – due to be held in the Heritage City from the 1st to the 4th of July.

Unfortunately, the recent return of COVID-19 cases in parts of Queensland has put the brakes on the festival, which will now be held from the 26th to the 29th of August 2021.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council announced yesterday the exhibition of Carmel’s various costumes as Mary Heritage, Mary Poppins and Steam Punk Mary – among other ‘Mary’ roles – is still open to the public.

People are still being encouraged to visit The Story Bank and experience the magic.

Carmel is retiring from her role as the face of Maryborough.

Officials are busy recruiting suitable replacements for the accomplished storyteller.

Good News Fraser Coast reported earlier this month that Carmel had spent 23 years sharing Maryborough’s stories, secrets and magic; merging the art of storytelling with information and entertainment.

“I turn 70 next month and it’s the right time for me to step down,” Carmel said at the time.

“I have always loved what I do. But I’ve been in this role for so long. It’s the right time for me to retire and allow a new person to promote the city and region with fresh eyes.”

Always dressed for the part, Carmel said her costume helped break down barriers and allowed her to talk to people and begin her story about the Heritage City.

“It was never a case of just being someone in costume. I would talk to people and share information about our beautiful city with them. I love Maryborough and all its people,” she said.

“Being Mary Heritage was a vehicle that allowed me to promote the city.”
