According to the Jetstar website, flights will take-off on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour took to Facebook to welcome the announcement.
“Direct flights between Hervey Bay and Sydney with Jetstar Australia is a great outcome for our community,” he said.
Cr Seymour thanked Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari, Minister for Tourism Stirling Hinchliffe and the Queensland Government for working together with Council and Jetstar to get the route implemented.
Council said the Queensland Government helped secure the flights through its $15-million Aviation Recovery Fund.

Some Facebook users who responded to Cr Seymour’s post said they were excited because the flights started just in time for the whale watching season, while others said it would make seeing family easier.
Hervey Bay is considered the whale watching capital of the world with thousands of humpback whales stopping in the calm waters as they migrate from Antarctica.
The whale watching season is traditionally considered to run from July to November.
